SPD Crime Dashboard Report for Magnolia 2015!

Hello all,

We have finally received our crime report for December 2015. I have attached a pdf file of SPD’s crime dashboard to compare December 2014 and December 2015.  You can see that during our patrols in the month of December we saw a 7% decrease in property crimes and we also saw a 7% decrease across the board of all crimes in Magnolia.

We are continuing our patrols each month with a reduction of 3 days a week 7 hours a day compare to our coverage in December of 5 days a week 6 hours a day. We have covered shifts from days, afternoons, evenings and late night. I have sent out our daily activity reports to our contributors after each shift the following day. I also on occasion have sent out reports to everybody on our list who have contributed or not contributed.

We have received many praises from our contributors, community, and residents from other neighborhoods. The NeigborhoodSafetyAlliance.org is a major supporter for private patrols in all neighborhoods in Seattle and many of the organizers from the NSA are from Magnolia and are contributors to Magnolia Patrol.

Their are several neighborhoods in the city that have reached out to us and in the early stages of setting up a patrol program. They are Queen Anne Patrol, Loyal Heights, and North Green Lake.

We currently have over 135 contributors and are still getting contributions every week. If you have not consider contributing please do so, the more contributors we have the more patrols we can add to our patrol coverage in the community.

The vacation request have been very popular for our contributors and we are looking into having an additional fee for anyone looking to have daily or weekly house checks. If this interests you please send me an email at joe@magnoliapatrol.org. If you like the idea and their is enough interest the board will discuss the possibility of adding this service.

Community Meeting, Wednesday January 6th, 6:30pm – 8:30pm. Please Attend!

On Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at 6:30pm – 8:30pm at the United Church of Christ located at 3555 W. McGraw St. A group of residents from Magnolia and other communities in the city will be having a community safety meeting to rally together and address the ongoing “crime” city-wide. This meeting will be focused on concerns and solutions that we as residents of our community want our elected officials, police and the Mayor to address our concerns now.

Magnolia Patrol does supports this effort and we will continue to help other neighborhoods. On a side note, their is a core group of residents on Queen Anne that are working together to start a patrol program next year. The website is QAPatrol.org. Please spread the word to your family and friends who live on Queen Anne. They are also looking for volunteers.

Magnolia Patrol Board of Directors will be attending this meeting and if you have any questions for us we are available at the meeting. I will also share our progress of our patrols this month. Please stop by and support our community and our neighboring communities.

Starting Patrols on December 4th!

To Magnolia Patrol Association Contributors:

The Magnolia Patrol Association (MPA) was founded in February 2015. The goal of the association has been to increase the security of the Magnolia community and lessen the opportunity for property crimes through the presence of security patrols, surveillance and reporting.

The activation of security patrols has been delayed but a great deal of behind-the-scenes work has been accomplished since our first community meeting. The MPA Board of Directors and Advisory Council have donated hundreds of hours to ensure a considered, researched and well-planned launch of our neighborhood security patrol. Our objective was not to just “get started” but to begin a patrol strategy that would ensure success and longevity. Board members researched other neighborhood patrol procedures and practices, sought legal advice, interviewed independent patrol companies and consulted with representatives of the Seattle Police Department.

MPA understands that the need for extra security is more timely than ever. Magnolia residents are ready to take back our neighborhood with MPA’s help!

Your contributions have afforded MPA with the funds necessary to hire Central Protection (CentralProtection.com). These private security professionals will begin patrolling the Magnolia community on December 4th. The patrol cars will be easily identifiable; white and blue Hummers with the “Central Protection – Unarmed” emblem on the side of the vehicle. Each patrol employee will wear a dark blue uniform. MPA has contracted with CP for four to seven hour patrol shifts (random) for four to six days per week. CP will be informed about “hot spots” in our community. If suspicious activity is observed CP will immediately: contact 911, and maintain visual surveillance of the perpetrator until Seattle Police arrive at the scene.

The executive director of MPA will be “on duty” when CP is working in our community and will oversee the patrol activities. Magnolia residents are urged to first call 911 for any suspicious activity. A secondary call to report this suspicious activity can be made to 206-693-0633. An after-action activity report will be available to any contributor after a patrol shift is complete.

New 1st Watch SPD Officer!

This morning I had the pleasure of meeting with Officer Mike McDonald our new SPD district officer. We discussed about our Magnolia Patrol Association and the needs of our community especially property crimes and our expectations as a community.

He came to us from the Q3 sector in the lower Queen Anne area and is very familiar with our Magnolia area, since he was the back up unit to our previous officer for the past 5 years. Our previous officer who retired due to a OPA Complaint from a resident who voiced her concern on a incident a few months ago on NextDoor.com https://magnolia.nextdoor.com/news_feed/?post=14847548

You will not see Officer McDonald at Starbucks unless it is work related or getting information from a community leader or residents about the hot spots of crime in Magnolia. He is very pro-active and he will be out patrolling and giving out tickets especially in the school zone at Blaine on 32nd Ave W. and on 34th Ave W. This is fair warning when school starts to other residents driving your kids to school.

I will be meeting with very often to coordinate our efforts with the Magnolia Patrol and Block Watches.

So far we have been receiving emails and praise from residents about Officer McDonald since being assigned to Magnolia in a very short time as our district officer. Please give him a warm welcome to our community.

Also, I will be updating our contributors and donators on the current status of Magnolia Patrol and efforts that we have done the past 90 days.

Tax Exemption Status Pending!

Hi all,

It has been brought to my attention of a question from several members of Magnolia Patrol of our pending application for tax exemption status as a non-profit organization. The questions I have been hearing is when will Magnolia Patrol receive their tax exemption status. I know there is a few registered members who have not subscribed as of yet because of our pending tax status.

Information about subscribing or donating while our application for tax exemption is pending you can click here for more information on the IRS website to clarify that specific question.

The IRS states:

When the IRS approves a timely filed exemption application, exempt status is recognized back to the date the organization was created. Thus, while an application is pending, the organization can treat itself as exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3).  For example, it must file Form 990 (instead of an income tax return) while its application is pending.  However, contributors to the organization do not have advance assurance of deductibility because the organization’s exemption is pending.  If the organization ultimately qualifies for exemption for the period in which the contribution is made, the contribution will be tax-deductible by the donor.  Alternatively, if the organization ultimately does not qualify for exemption, then the contribution will not be tax deductible.

Your contribution will be tax deductible once the IRS has processed our application. The IRS time frame to process applications are 6 to 18 months. Again, we are following the same protocols and following the same model as the other neighborhood patrols.

I hope this clears up any questions you may have on our tax exemption status. We are on track on getting our patrols out into the neighborhood soon. We cannot give you specific times when our patrols are out, but I can tell you that the Seattle off-duty police officers will be either in a unmarked or marked vehicle. You will also begin seeing a Magnolia Patrol Support Vehicle driving around the community to promote and reach out to the residents, businesses and condo / apartment complex about our patrols and hopefully have them subscribe to our membership.

Just a reminder our grand opening launch date is Saturday, June 6, 2015 10am-2pm at the Farmers Market.

We will have a table outside the Farmers Market on 32nd and McGraw St. We will have our volunteers to answer any questions that you may have about the Magnolia Patrol. We have invited the Community Policing Team for Magnolia Officer Larabee to this event.

We will be accepting membership subscriptions during that time. We accept checks, and credit cards at the table or for your convenience you may mail your checks or walk over to the Mailbox office at 3213 W. Wheelers St. and drop it off with Dan at the front counter.

Magnolia Patrol Update as of May 1st.
